Dental Assistant Trainee Program

Southcentral Foundation Dental Assistant Trainee Program offers paid on-the-job training to learn the skills needed to become a successful dental assistant. As an SCF employee trainee, you will be placed in one of the fast-growing dental clinic locations, and receive dedicated hands-on and classroom training.

Potential placements are available in Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. Placement locations are dependent on clinical needs.

Once all training objectives and clinical competencies are successfully completed, you will transition into a dental assistant one position and receive a pay increase.

During this training, you will:

  • Receive pay and full benefits while you learn.
  • Receive classroom instruction and perform chairside assisting with a dental integrated care team.
  • Gain knowledge in all areas of general dentistry and develop teamwork, customer service, communication skills, and relevant computer training.
  • Receive placement in one of our various dental clinics with an integrated dental care team that will mentor you in your training and development.

Upon completion of the program, the student should be able to:

  • Assist chairside, maintain proper asepsis, and utilize instruments, equipment, and moisture control in all aspects of dentistry. This includes assisting with anesthetic, performing rubber dam application, sealants, fluoride, and oral hygiene instruction.
  • Identify and apply concepts of dental terminology, record customer-owner medical and dental history.
  • Identify and apply the concepts of dental ethics in relationship to dental teams, culturally and professionally.
  • Acquire, mount, and critique radiographs including panoramic and digital radiographic images.

This training program combines didactic and clinical training on the Alaska Native Health Campus.

  • Training in a state-of-the-art dental clinic with experienced instructors and employees
  • Gaining knowledge of dental disease and prevention
  • Professional communication and customer service

This program and career include potential exposure to blood-borne and infectious diseases. Southcentral Foundation maintains policies and procedures developed for these risks. This information is available upon request prior to admission.

To qualify for the program, you must:

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Be age 18 or older
  • Submit two to three professional references
  • Have or receive upon hire immunizations in line with SCF Employee Health Requirements, including COVID-19 vaccination.

Please note that preference is given to Alaska Native and American Indian applicants.
